Prof Desmond Mathye

We welcome as a speaker Professor Desmond Mathye, a physiotherapist with 25 years of experience as a clinician, academic and healthcare governance professional.

He is the immediate past President of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), where he became the first physiotherapist and the first professional outside medicine and dentistry to hold this position. He also served as Chairperson of the Professional Board for Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Biokinetics and as a member of the Compensation Fund Board under the Department of Employment and Labour.

Professor Mathye holds an LLB, a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy, a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Early Childhood Intervention and a PhD. He has supervised 35 postgraduate students to completion, including four doctoral candidates. He is currently an Extraordinary Associate Professor at North-West University..
